What is a Responsible Breeder?

A Responsible Breeder is always concerned with the health and well being of the mother and puppies. Puppies' progress should include weigh-ins to ensure that all are gaining evenly; their dam is regularly checked to insure that she is doing well also. Puppies should receive vaccinations based on accepted veterinary schedules.

A Responsible Breeder is not in a hurry to sell the puppies. They will allow puppies to leave for new homes at about 12 weeks of age (but it is typical that many Responsible Breeders take deposits for litters just born or shortly due).

These are the ethics we subscribe to:

Maltese puppies should be about 10 weeks old before leaving for their new home

The puppies will have had a veterinarian examination and at least one inoculation against distemper, hepatitis, and parvo

Provision of written details regarding feeding, care, and nutrition, along with a health record

And no Responsible Breeder will ever sell puppies through a pet shop. The act of not screening prospective homes shows they are not Responsible Breeders.

Laptop Maltese is proud to be a Responsible Breeder. If the breeder you are speaking with does not follow these ethics, please reconsider purchasing from them.
